Events and services

At Greenhead Moss we offer a variety of services for visitors and the local community.

Services for schools and community groups

- quality provision with real learning outcomes:

We are actively invloved with local schools, both primary & secondary, delivering specialist talks on subjects linked to the national curriculum. We also host visits from schools either as a nature discovery walk or specific acitvity.  We can offer advice to local primary schools on Eco-school activities & projects to help them achieve their eco-flags.

We are not limited to working with schools and would encourage any local communuity groups, colleges or associations looking for activities, talks or assistance to contact us via the "contact us page" on this site.

Examples of our educational programmes and activities:

  • Mini-beast activities using magnifiers, trays and special 'pooters' where each child can safely capture their own mini-beast. They can then work out its species though a simple key, draw it or make a model of it with craft and natural materials. Learning outcome: wildlife habitats and their occupants, species diversity and characteristics, inter-relationships - when they eat each other in the trays!
  • We regularly provide a treasure trail hunt activity for groups visiting the site. Participants enjoy the challenge of the walk as they follow the clues and guess the answers to historical, wildlife and other puzzles about the park. Learning outcome: more knowledge and awareness of the park's history and features and more confidence in navigating their way around the park in the future.
  • We have a mini-earthship activity where you build the earthship with individual (mini) tyres, layout the rooms inside and install the solar and wind power units. Learning outcome: how buildings can be designed differently using recycled materials and renewable energy; a better idea of what is to be built at Greenhead Moss.
  • NEW!  Fun with fossil fuels' activity. An exploration of coal, coal mining and fossil fuels. Includes an interactive mine complete with miners jobs for you to do. Available for schools and community events. Call us for more details. Available from March, 2008.  Learning outcomes: local history of mining and local place names, work and society links, fossil fuel and basic geology, alternatives to fossil fuels for heating and transport.

Recent events: LNR Celebration Day

Thanks to all who came along and helped us celebrate the wild and wonderful things Perchy Pond Local Nature Reserve has to offer. This was part of the Scotland wide series of events to promote and enjoy nature on your doorstep this spring,  and special thanks to Jan Hendry, an artist who used our local clay soils to make amazing pictures with kids and adults alike.

The event was sponsored by Scottish Natural Heritage.
